Florida History

The history of Florida dates back to thousands of years. Archeologists have proved that there were inhabitants in Florida even a thousand year before any European civilization started.

The land was discovered by a Spanish conquistador Ponce de León on 2nd April 1513. It was the time of Pascua Florida, a Spanish term for the Easter season- hence the name of the city Florida originated from.

Over the following century, both the Spanish and French established settlements in Florida, with varying degrees of success. In 1559, Spanish Pensacola was established by Don Tristán de Luna y Arellano as the first European settlement in the continental United States, but by 1561 it was aboandoned. French Huguenots founded Fort Caroline in Jacksonville in 1564, but the fort was conquered by forces from the new Spanish colony of St. Augustine the following year.

Introduction of French colonies in the west and English colonies to the north diminished the Spanish reign in Florida. In 1973 Great Britain achieved the total control on Florida with the newly settled alliance with France.

On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the United States of America. On June 25, 1868, after the Civil War was over Florida's congressional representation was restored.
