About Naples
Situated in the southern Italy , Naples is a historical city as it is the capital of Campania region and the province of Naples . The city is located in the mid area between two Volcanic zones- these are Mount Vesivius and Phlegrean fields both situated on the coast of the Gulf Of Naples .
This 2500 year old city is famed for her history, art, culture and gastronomy. The city was founded by the ancient Greeks and was named Neapolis- the word means new city . During the roman period the city served as an inevitable part in the central province of the empire. It was also an important part of the Magna Graecia- the south- Italian colony established by the Greeks. Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples from 1282 to 1816. After the unification of Sicily and Naples it became the capital of the two Sicilies. It remained so till the Italian Unification.
Today the metropolitan of Naples is the second most populated city in Italy as the historic centre of the city has been awarded as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inhabitants of the city are called Neapolitans or sometimes Partenopei in poetic terms.
