About Orleans
Orleans is a city in the centre of France, 81 miles
south-west of the capital, Paris. It’s the capital of the
Loiret department and of the Centre region. The city is
situated on the Loire River and is the inspiration in the
naming of the U.S city of New Orleans in Louisiana.
The city is famous for its part in the story of Joan of Arc,
the national heroine of France. On the South bank of the
River Loire the “Chatelet des Tourelles” protected access to
the bridge crossing the river in the 14th and 15th
centuries. This was the site of the battle in 1429 which
allowed Joan of Arc to liberate the city from the English
during the Hundred Years’ War. This earned her the title of
Maid of Orleans, which is mentioned in the city’s lore to
this day.
The city is home to several museums of interest, such as the
Musee des Beaux-Arts de Orleans, which hosts a number of
artworks detailing the history of Orleans and its culture,
along with pieces from a few centuries ago. As well as these
attractions you can also see Joan of Arc’s House and the
attached museum, along with the Parc Floral de la Source.
The Parc is the most visited site in Loiret and consists of
86 acres of land, split into two main areas. The Plateau de
Sologne, which is a semi-natural forest and La Plaine du Val
de Loire, which is home to floral and horticultural works.
Due to its location in the centre of the country it’s able
to attract businesses who want to be close to the capital
but also want to avoid the high costs of Paris. Because of
this the once large city has managed to retain some of its
importance.
